John Knox House, Edinburgh, Scotland

This is my original pen and watercolour painting of John Knox House, completed only yesterday. It wasn’t on my ‘To Do’ list, but when I saw the building , its colours and styles I had to paint it.

Born in 1514, John Knox was a Scottish minister and writer who was a leader of Scotland’s Reformation and founder of the Presbyterian Church of Scotland.

Located on Edinburgh’s Royal Mile, John Knox House is a well-known tourist attraction. It is one of the oldest houses in the City, mostly built in the mid-16th century, but with parts dating back to 1470.

Whether he actually lived in the house or not, the connection with John Knox certainly saved the building from demolition and it underwent a major restoration in the mid 19th century.

John Knox House is still open to the public, telling the story of the Reformation and showing how people lived 400 years ago.

Tradition says a small window on the first floor was once used by Knox to preach at people in the street. The view down the Royal Mile from this window is stunning, and well worth a visit.

The Dimensions of the painted area are approximately 7” x 5” (17 x 12cm) on Arches hot pressed 300gsm watercolour paper and painted using Winsor & Newton professional watercolour paints.

This painting, in a simple black frame, is available for sale through Listing Number 500 in my Etsy Shop for only £40. This includes UK delivery, with an additional £3.50 for international deliveries.
