My latest pen & watercolour commission, completed mid-December 2023, of the popular wedding destination “Sorn Castle” located in Ayrshire, Scotland.

At the time I didn’t know there were two Sorn Castles, the one in Ayrshire and another on the Isle of Mull, both stunning buildings, and unfortunately I did my preliminary work on the wrong one!

However, I soon realised there were two and got my customer to confirm which one she wanted.

Her wish was for the painting to be done in shades of black/grey, a new experience for me. I decided to start with a black created from a mix of brown madder and indigo (which gives a juicy rich black), diluted to give a range of grey tones. I also used some Payne’s Grey in places.

On receiving the final work my customer commented “I am blown away, you have captured it perfectly, the detail is just amazing, thank you so much”. I was very grateful for her kind words.

Another thing I didn’t know at the time was that this Sorn Castle was one of the locations for the BBC adaptation of the 1939 Agatha Christie novel “Murder is easy”, which aired on BBC over the 2023 December holiday period. So a pleasant surprise when I watched the programme.
