The St Austell Railway Viaduct

This is my pen & watercolour of the St Austell Railway Viaduct (see my drawing process on YouTube).

The Viaduct is a monumental construction. At 35m high and 220m long, the stone viaduct which links St Austell by rail to the rest of Cornwall was opened in 1899. The construction, which was first made of wood, is built on a curve.

I spent five very happy years in St Austell back in the 1990s and Cornwall still holds a very special place in my heart. My painting shows the present-day railway viaduct with the stone pillars of an earlier construction in front of it, all as viewed from Trenance Road, just south of its junction with Grove Road.

I did the drawing digitally on my iPad and then transferred it on to watercolour paper. The Dimensions of the painted area are approx 30 x 21cm and it’s on a 38x28cm sheet of Saunders Waterford Cold Pressed 300gsm watercolour paper and painted using Winsor & Newton watercolours.
