At around 10pm on the 6th July 1988, 34 years ago to the day, the Piper Alpha North Sea Oil Platform exploded and sank, killing 165 platform workers and 2 rescue workers.
It’s the World’s worst offshore oil disaster, and it had a devastating impact on the industry and the city of Aberdeen.
My sketch for today shows the buoy which marks the spot where Alpha lies beneath the waves, with its sister platform Bravo in the background, still producing today.
Life goes on, but we never forget.
